Introducing: A Series on Gluten and Mormons (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)

A good friend of mine sent me a note on Facebook this morning, asking about how to deal with cooking at LDS Young Women Camp for a young woman in her stake who has Celiac. In answering her question, I decided, as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), to write a series of blog posts about some common issues that arise with gluten and give suggestions for those who aren’t familiar with how to deal with them.

If there are any topics you’d like me to address, leave me a comment and let me know!

  1. I want to see what you have to say as well. Now that I’m in YW I have thought I might have a pass on ever going to girls camp since I really wasn’t sure what they would feed me. I could see it being even harder for people who don’t know what they are doing to prepare food for a YW. I just think there would be more room for rookie errors that seem to happen, though the YW can be very well informed.

  2. My mom was diagnosed with Celiac about 20 years ago, and my official diagnosis came about 8 months ago. Celiac is one of those unfortunate things where there isn’t a common cure yet. Lactosse intolerance can be fixed with a pill, and diabetes can be treated with insulin injections. My mom and I have learned to cope though, and have found several glutne-free versions of recipies that we loved such as cake, bread, cookies, pizza, etc. Having a bread machine is always helpful with these recipies, though there are others that don’t require them. I look forward to your future posts!!

    • 8 months! Wow! I’d tell you that it gets easier, but since your mom was diagnosed 20 years ago, I bet you know that. :) Isn’t it great how we all learn to cope and figure out what works for us? Thanks for stopping by!
